Encrypt Data or Invite Disaster
Losing your organization’s data can be expensive in several ways. First, you'll burn through many thousands of dollars to replace hardware or systems. Second, you'll suffer the time and aggravation of restoring your data, all the while hoping you have everything properly backed up. The most expensive consequence may be surviving the backlash and legal consequences of losing customer data, financial records, health records, and private company information.

From financial institutions losing credit card numbers to even the White House losing emails – in order to avoid being tomorrow’s headline horror story, data encryption has become another cost of doing business. If you access customer or confidential client information of any kind, there is no alternative but to fully safeguard that data through encryption.

Abtech Systems offers a full range of leading edge encryption products and solutions to meet your compliance and security needs.

There are many types of encryption: complete encryption at the enterprise level; database encryption; SAN/NAS tape backup encryption to protect data stored on off-line backup tapes; data in transit encryption, which can compress and encrypt data in transit for enterprise environments such as banks, insurance, health care, government, retailers, etc. ; laptop and mobile computing encryption; email encryption.

When you send an email that contains sensitive information, encryption stops unauthorized access to your data. Increasingly, email encryption is becoming required by law:

  • A new HIPAA law that went into effect in February of 2010 has drastic implications including a penalty for violations up to $1.5 million.
  • A number of states and local governments have passed laws that  businesses to   secure confidential customer information if it is sent electronically. Confidential  information being defined as Social Security and employer-identification numbers, drivers' license or identity card data, account, credit and debit card numbers with any password or security and access codes.
  • The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) protects consumers' personal financial information held by financial institutions. Its "Safeguards Rule" requires all   financial institutions to design, implement and maintain safeguards to secure confidential data.

With new laws and regulations being introduced and passed, encryption isn’t easy and there are pitfalls to the choices that are available. Your Abtech sales representative can help lead you through the pros and cons of encrypting at the appliance, software and peripheral levels.
