Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL 6)

Red Hat released version 6 of its Enterprise Linux platform on 10th November 2010. It includes a number of enhancements in areas such as Scalability, Power Saving and as a foundation for a cloud strategy. The key developments are as follows:

Scalability - Support for 16TB memory, 4000 CPUs supported and File Systems up to 100TB in size with new XFS tools.

Performance - RHEL 6 introduces management of NUMA (Non-Uniform Memory Access), which allows the kernel to distribute workloads across compute resources to optimize performance.

Power Saving - RHEL 6 takes full advantage of the feature within Intel Nehalem and AMD 4000/6000 series processors where the system powers down when it is not busy, delivering a 40% power saving.

Updates - Red Hat has added 1,800 features to the OS and resolved more than 14,000 bug issues.

Cloud and Virtualization - With version 6 RHEL has matured into the business operating system for both virtualization and The Cloud. It works equally well on VMware, Hyper V or Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) and when combined with other components in Red Hat's Cloud Foundations suite, it forms the basis of a fully functional Private Cloud for delivering business applications.
