There is little doubt that server virtualization is one of the IT success
stories of recent times. Even so, the cost of virtualization software has put
many organisations off deploying it. Red Hat has addressed this with Red Hat
Enterprise Virtualization "RHEV".
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager 2.2 Features
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager for Servers is a feature-rich server
virtualization management system that competes with other leading virtualization
platforms, key features include:
- Live migration:
Allows virtual machines to be moved from one host to another while running
with no affect on performance.
- New!
Prioritized High availability: Critical VMs restart automatically on a
new host when hardware fails. New priority feature allows you to rank VMs in
case not all highly available VMs can be restarted on remaining hardware,
ensuring your mission-critical applications always have priority.
- Maintenance manager:
Allows hosts to be upgraded and maintained while virtual machines are
running.
- Image manager:
Enables thin provisioning of disk storage and use of templates to quickly
build new virtual machines from standard configurations.
- Power saver:
Allows the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager to consolidate virtual
machines on a smaller number of hosts during non-peak hours and power down
unneeded hosts.
- System scheduler:
Allows the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager to migrate virtual
machines across multiple hosts to balance workloads.
- New! V2V Conversion Tools: Import Red Hat Enterprise Linux
guests from Red Hat Enterprise Linux/Xen or VMWare. Additional converters
coming soon.
- New! Backup and Restore Support:
Support from leading third-party backup vendors for Red Hat Enterprise
Virtualization VM backup using agents in the VM.
- New! Reporting Engine: Documented database schema and
sample reports for extracting information from Red Hat Enterprise
Virtualization Manager.
- New! Search Driven User Interface
with tagging: Allows you
to search both on virtual machine and host characteristics as well as
arbitrary tags you can assign.
- Consistent Management Environment for Server and Desktop
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) is fully supported by Microsoft and
includes support for most Windows and Linux server versions. It includes many of
the features of proprietary virtualization platforms including clustering and
live migration, but at a lower price.
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization is based on KVM (Kernel Virtualization)
technology that is part of the Linux kernel. This means that any hardware or
software that is supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, will run on RHEV without
modification.
